If you have ever shuffled a tarot deck and felt your stomach drop when a particular card appeared, you are certainly not alone because some cards carry a reputation that can feel a bit overwhelming at first. In my nine years of reading professionally, I have come to see these cards as powerful allies for growth and I would love to share a more positive perspective on what they actually mean for your journey.
Many of the fears we have about tarot come from movies or old superstitions that don't reflect the true, healing nature of the cards. When we look closer, we find that the most "frightening" cards are often the ones that offer the most profound opportunities for transformation and liberation.
What I find in my sessions with clients in Marietta and beyond is that once we demystify these cards, they actually become some of the most welcome visitors in a spread. They signal that the universe is ready to help you make a significant shift that you might have been struggling to make on your own. Instead of seeing them as "bad omens," I invite you to see them as "growth catalysts."
They are the energetic pushes we need to stop settling for less than we deserve and to start living more authentically. Let's take a look at four of the most misunderstood cards and uncover the wisdom and love they truly carry for you.
The Death Card
Something I always clarify for my clients is that the Death card signals a beautiful transformation and the release of what no longer serves you. It often appears when a relationship, a belief system, or an old version of yourself is completing its cycle so that something new and better can emerge.
While letting go can feel frightening, this card is often the very permission you needed to move forward into your next chapter. In my experience, the Death card is rarely about a physical passing; it is almost always about the "death" of an old way of being that has become too small for the person you are becoming.
One thing that comes up a lot is the feeling of grief that can accompany this card, and that is a completely valid part of the process. Even when we know something is no longer good for us, it can still be hard to say goodbye. I find that when this card appears, it is an invitation to honor that grief while also keeping your eyes on the horizon. It is like the changing of the seasons; the autumn leaves must fall so that the tree can rest and prepare for the new growth of spring.
By embracing the ending that the Death card represents, you are clearing the space for a magnificent new beginning that you couldn't have even imagined before.
When I see the Death card in a reading, I often feel a sense of excitement for the client because I know that a significant burden is about to be lifted. Whether it's a job that has been draining your spirit or a pattern of self-doubt that has been holding you back, this card says that the time for that struggle is over. It is a card of profound hope and renewal, reminding us that we are constantly evolving and that every ending is a sacred doorway to a more authentic version of ourselves.
The Tower
The Tower is a dramatic card that often appears when something built on an unstable foundation is being cleared away so that you can rebuild on ground that will actually hold you. This card helps you by removing what was never truly stable, and I often find that it invites us to look at what we have been holding together through sheer will that might be ready for release. It is a powerful moment of clearing that makes room for authentic growth.
While the image of a lightning-struck tower can be jarring, the "lightning" is actually a flash of divine insight or a sudden shift in perspective that breaks through our illusions.
In my nine years of reading, I have seen the Tower manifest as a sudden realization that a relationship isn't working, a quick change in career plans, or an unexpected event that forces us to re-evaluate our priorities. What I find is that while the initial shift can feel chaotic, the aftermath is often a sense of incredible clarity.
You no longer have to spend your energy trying to maintain something that was crumbling anyway. Now, you have a clean slate and the wisdom to build something that is truly aligned with your soul's purpose. The Tower arrives with a purpose and carries here to set you free from a structure that was too rigid to allow for your growth.
I always remind my clients that we are the architects of our own lives, but sometimes we need a little help from the universe to clear out the old blueprints. When the Tower appears, it's a sign that you are strong enough to handle the change and that you are being guided toward a more solid and truthful way of living. It is a card of liberation and breakthrough, and I love helping my clients find the "gold" in the rubble so they can start building their new, more beautiful life with confidence.
The Ten of Swords
While the image of this card is quite stark, its true meaning centers on the moment when a difficult chapter finally comes to a close so that a new one can begin. The Ten of Swords tells us that the worst is behind us and because the cycle is complete, the only direction left to go is up toward the light. I often see this card as a sign of ultimate surrender; you have reached the end of a particular road and you are finally ready to let go and allow a new path to reveal itself. It is a card of deep rest and the beginning of a healing journey.
One thing that comes up a lot is the feeling of being "defeated" when this card appears, but I prefer to see it as being "released." You no longer have to fight a battle that can't be won.
What I find in my sessions is that the Ten of Swords often brings a profound sense of relief, even if it's mixed with a bit of exhaustion. It's the feeling you get when a long, hard rain finally stops and you see the first hint of sun on the horizon. It's time to put down your swords and let yourself be held and healed by the light of a new day.
When I interpret this card for you, we will look at what you are finally ready to stop struggling with and how you can best support yourself as you transition into this new phase. It's a moment of profound vulnerability that is also incredibly powerful, because you are now open to receiving help and guidance in a way you weren't before. The Ten of Swords is a promise that the sun will rise again and that you have everything you need to begin anew, wiser and more resilient than ever before.
The Five of Cups
The Five of Cups is a card that acknowledges grief and disappointment while also reminding us to look at the two cups that are still standing. It invites us to shift our focus toward the love and opportunities that remain so that we can find our way back to joy. This card is a beautiful lesson in perspective and the importance of honoring our feelings without getting lost in them. In my experience, the Five of Cups appears when we have been focusing so much on what we've lost that we've forgotten to see what we still have and what we've gained through the experience.
What I find in my sessions is that this card is a gentle nudge from Spirit to turn around and see the bridge that leads to a new way of being. The work is real, and the grief is real, and it deserves to be felt, but it doesn't have to be the end of your story. I love helping my clients identify those "two remaining cups", the strengths, the relationships, and the inner wisdom that have survived the difficult times. By focusing on these blessings, you can begin to rebuild your sense of hope and move forward with a heart that is both tender and strong.
